Frustration

Do you feel like you are frustrated with yourself, musically? Are you not satisfied with your current skill? Do you look at other musicians with envy because you think that they are better than you? These are all signs of musical frustration and these are all normal. Many musical masters are also frustrated with themselves for a while but ended up becoming part of the pages of musical history. It is normal for a guitar player to go through this scenario but it is not good however to dwell on it because it might affect your entire emotion and make you quit playing the guitar.

So to conquer this, you must have the following attitude towards your musical skill:

  1. Confidence – everybody starts from scratch. Some are just quicker in terms of learning. Or maybe you just aren’t practicing enough. Be confident in what you have and what you do, and everything shall follow.
  2. Patience – you cannot just jump over the ledge and become a guitar master overnight. Be patient, practice according to the right methods of doing it and follow the right path. Soon you shall reap the rewards of your hard work. It’s okay to envy better guitar players, matter of fact, they themselves went through the same situation, but use it to fuel your passion, not to discourage you.

Barre chords

Chords are the basic stuff that you should learn. You could start with the major chords, then the minor chords, then the 7th, the major 7th, the minor 7th and so on and so forth. Barre chords are also a different thing. It’s a chord shape, a moveable chord shape that you could use for many different chords just by moving it up the fretboard. How to do a barre chord? First, you should know that there are two types of barre chords that you could use with major chords. One is the E Type Barre Chord and the other is A Type Barre Chord. I call them like that because they are based on that chord shape or the open chord. The E type starts with an open chord E then if you move it up one fret, it would be an E Type F Barre chord, and so on and so forth.

The A Type barre chord starts with the open chord A. the A triad. And then if you move it one fret up, that would be A Type Bb barre chord. Move it up one more fret again and that would be A Type B Barre Chord. The E type and the A type are made up words that I came up with.

ACTION

You might receive a guitar as a present for Christmas and you never dared touch it because you don’t know what to do with it. That’s fine, because sooner or later you would go and open it. It has this mystic power calling you to grab it and unwrap it. I’m just kidding. You need to pick up that guitar and start learning. Maybe some of you don’t like to pick that guitar anymore because the strings are too hard for you to press down or maybe it’s just too easy to press it down and you can’t play comfortably with it. The reason contributing to this factor is the string height or action. The distance between the fretboard and your strings. There is no law that states that there is a right action setting on the guitar. It depends on the player’s preference. Like for example, if you want to play metal – fast on an Ibanez JEM, try low action. Adjust the truss rod to lower the distance between the strings and the fretboard. But if you like playing the blues like SRV, High Action is the right thing for you. For me, I want it balanced, not to soft and not too hard.
